In recent times the importance of adequate sleep has come to light.
.
In fact your brain needs you to sleep so it can remove toxic proteins from its neurons that build up as a normal by-product of your daily activities! A lack of sleep can negatively impact your body as much as eating poorly and not exercising.
.
Sleep inadequacy has been linked to:
  • Increase hunger & subsequent weight gain
  • Hormonal disruption & exacerbating menopausal symptoms
  • Tripling your risk of getting sick
  • Inability to focus
  • Impeding your emotional intelligence
  • Type 2 diabetes, heart disease & stroke
This week I interviewed Bev Roberts, an Integrative Health and Well-being coach, who is also an Accredited Change Manager Master who has a Master’s degree in behaviour change and strategy!
.
After her own journey with chronic illness, Bev recognized that a lack of sleep was the very first issue she needed to address. She researched everything about optimising well-being and the power of restorative sleep.
.
Bev says: ‘I needed to be convinced that sleep was the kindest thing I could do for myself and it was all in my control’.
,
To help relax the body and release toxins, Bev suggested the 4-7-8 breathing technique instead. This is where you breathe in for a count of 4, hold your breath for a count of 7 and exhale for 8.
.
I would encourage you to download Bev’s ‘Done for you Wind Down Sleep Routine’ which you can access here
.
I know for me, sleep is one of my NON-negotiable self-care practices.
.
When I put down my wine glass after getting breast cancer in 2013, my sleep improved enormously!
No more waking in the middle of the night not being able to go back to sleep.
.
I also stopped the caffeine after lunch, even to the point of not eating my favourite 85% chocolate at night (so lunchtime it is!).
And I try to be in bed before 9pm reading a book.
.

Keto: The good, the bad, and the ugly

Is this high-fat diet supporting menopausal weight loss? There is still a lot of confusion around keto, a high-fat diet that puts the body into ketosis, which basically means you stop eating carbohydrates so your body burns fat for fuel rather than glucose. However,...
